The Minister of Justice stated that a permanent apointmeht as Controller of Prisons, in succession to Mr Hawkins, is not being made at present, but-Mr B L. Dallard, of the Public Service Commissioner’s office will act meantime.

Captain Walter H. Smith, of Lyall Bay, formerly' master of. the pinion Company’s steamer Orawaiti, has forsaken the sea, .and will shortly be ordained a minister of the Church of England. His . first appointment will bp at Tolaga Bay. Captain Smith is forty-six years of age’ He served an apprenticeship in the Liverpool barque Ejnbleton, and was fourth officer of the Perthshire wlwn she was adrift for six weeks in 1899. He served 3n 'tlfe naval forces during 'the War, and lately out exploring uork among some little-known islands of the Pacific groups.—Press Assn.
