HOKITIKA, February 1. On Thursday evening the Hokitika Alunicipal Band paid its respects to Captain and Airs Stein (of the Salva„tiuii Army) on the occasiup of t|ieir recent marriage, which Wok place in Palmerston North. After tne usual serenading, customary vvitli tne band to its members un auspicious occasions, (lie members were invited in by the Captain and Mrs Stein, and during the course of a ciij) of tea the conductor (Mr C. B. Ross); on behalf of tne band, presented the Captain and his wile with a Doulton rose bowl, at tne same time stating 'that it was ap expression of gratitude and upprecia-. tioii by the band for the valuable help Captain Stein had. rendered the band on different occasions. He expressed the wish that the Captain would continue to help, and also that both fie and us good lady would have a long and happy weuded Jife. The gathering then sang “For They Are jolly Good Fellows.” Alessrs Richardsj Parklull, Good, and Dwan supplemented the conductor’s remarks. Captain Stein,' in returning thanks, said that that evening would long be remembered by him and nis wife for the good fellowship >hbw'n by the band. It had always been a pleasure to him to help, lor, said he, to a true bandsmen there is a "call” which he had to respond to. He.was happy when having a blow with a band. He wished the band continued success. The pleasant function concluded with the members again singing “For They Are Jolly Good fellows.”

The equanimity of the S.M. Court was disturbed here recently. During the hearing of an affiliation case there was a lull in the proceedings when a foreign jazz band l outside the Courthouse struck- up “AVhy Did I Kiss That Girl.” This was too much i°i' the man in blue, who went out) 'and requested the band to 1 move on. The town was enlivened on Saturday evening by a musical programme by the Greyriiouth Municipal Band. Their playing was of a high standard, and their efforts generally were much enjoyed by the large crowd who listened to them, and the wish expressed that the band will be successful at the forthcoming contest. Yesterday the Hokitika Alunicipal Band gave a programme in Cass squarp, and acquitted ■ itself admirably. ; There was a good gathering of the public. On Wednesday the annual excursion takes place, the locale feeing Victoria Park. Two traiiri will convey the picnickers to Greymouth. Archdeacon Julius and Airs Julius are visitors .to Hokitika- The Archdeacon preached in All ' ’ Saftits’ Church last evening, where there was a large congregation present. ' ‘ •
