TEST MATCH DEBATE (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, Jan. 31. The “Observer”says that Australia has her team in being to-day and asks shall England have hers one, two or three months’ hence? Even if assembled on paper what will be its prospects of becoming welded into a unity as the visitors will by daily practice? Discussing the controversy over the four day tests, the “Observer” asks: What are the chances of bringing the encounter to a finish in three days, when the sides opposed have quite supernormal batting power with bowling not above >the ordinary test .level and liable to be reduced? We know the argument that four day matches would reduce the country teams for a whole week. This' means that we meet Australia, not with the whole strength and energy, but only with what we can spare! Cricket authorities ought to have decided at the outset whether they regarded victory in tests as the supreme or limited consideration. If the former, then we ought to have four day matches.
