GOVERNMENT’S LAND SCHEME.

(Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.)

LONDON, January 30.

The Daily Express understands that the Cabinet is likely to adopt a new and far-reaching agricultural policy based on the formation of a Control Land Alortgage Corporation, formed with the co-operation of the joint stock banks, to provide credits on a national scale fqr the farmers upon such securities as those of crops, which the banks have hitherto refused to accept. The Government-will seek to develop agriculture by simila’r methods to those employed on the Continent, namely occupying ownership and small holdings. There will be a comprehensive land-drainage and reclamation scheme, opening up large areas for cultivation.

The proposals will be on a, scale calculated to affect the whole future of British agriculture.

EX-PREMIER AND JEWS

LONDON, January 29. „ • According to the “Daily Herald,’’ Mr Lloyd George’s recent reference to Sir Alfred Mond, viz., “Like the other notorious member of his race, he has gone to his own place,” has caused bitter resentment amongst the Jews. In the “Jewish Chronicle” to-day, an editorial says: “It is merely a piece of rude ruggedness for a man of Mr. Lloyd George’s eminence to go comparing to the disciple who betrayed his Maser, one whom, a. few days ago, he would have thought it fitting, had it suited his political purpose, to beslaver with that ripe unctoushness of which the ex-Premier appears to possess so unlimited a supply.” Mr. Lloyd George, at Shrewsbury, alluding to the controversy aroused by his reference to Sir A. Mond, said: “No one respects the Jewish race more than I. Whatever comments. I may have made upon certain specimens (and I have criticised the specimens of every race in turn) I have always been a great protagonist, and no one resented more strongly, the attacks upon them. Nothing fills me with greater contempt than to see newspapers drenched with anti-semitism, trying to make political capital out of the criticism which I passed upon a certain member of that race.” CHANCELLOR CRITICISED. LONDON, January 30. Mr. Philip Snowden has attacked Mr. Churchill’s Italian Debt Settlement. He declared that if Mr. Churchill remained much longer at the Exchequer, the country would soon have no national assets. He did not believe that any man could bring the finances to such a deplorable state m twelve months. BY-ELECTION RESULTS.
