The Rongotea police received a report this evening that the body of a man had been found on the Rangitikei beach, - belieyed to be that of the third officer, Batty, of the s.s/Kumara, who was drowned at Wanganui through a boat being thrown the mole and capsizing. .

PRISONERS SENTENCED, jCHRISTCHURCH, January 29.

Samuel Arthur Purdy, obtaining goods at Christchurch and Timaru by« valueless cheques, was declared an habitual criminal, and was- sentenced to two years’ imprisonment on each charge, concurrent.

FREEZING WORKS DISPUTE.

CHRISTCHURCH, January 29.

The Canterbury Freezing Works dispute is still unsettled. The men have ben working at the normal rate for the past two days in view of to-night’s conference with the employers, convened by the Conciliation Commissioner,; but no settlement was arrived at. , '

The.JJnion asked if the employers ’represented at the conference, namely, trie New Refrigerating Coy., the Canterbury Frozen Meat Coy., Borthwick and Son. and the North Canterbury Sheep Farmers, were empowered to give an undertaking on behalf ol all the companies affected. The employers/replied in the negative, stating that the award was Do-minion-wide in . its'scope, and they could not binJ all.the other coiripanies. The conference then adjourned.

WOMAN POISONED.

AUCKLAND, January 29.

At .the inquest on Mrs Katherine Frances McCullough, aged 33, wife of Arthur Stuart McCullough,- licensee Of the Hobson Hotel, evidence was given that the deceased left her bedroom at 5.10 p.m. yesterday, and told her husband, who was in the bar, that she had taken poison. She asked him to send for a doctor. McCulough obtained an emetic from a chemist’s shop, and called in a doctor, who sent her to the hospital; where she died at (|.20 p.m.* McCulough said that his wife had asked him to get her some stout, which he refused to do. When his wife said she had taken poison, he did not believe her, as she looked bright, and commenced to smoke a cigarette. When she persisted he sent for a doctor. There had not been any disagreements except when his wife took liquor.' The Coroner returned a verdict, of suicide in a fit of temporary insanity.

MOTORIST CENSURED

ROTORUA ,January 29

An inquest on the death of Tieri Tetikao was concluded last night. Deceased was killed instantly and his wife, Taukiri, died three weeks after an injury to her spine, as the result of an accident to a service car driven by Mrs Catanach, between Tauranga and Rotorua. After a very prolonged hearing, the jury brought in a verdict “That the deceased was killed as the result of a service" car driven by Mrs Cattanach, going over a bank at the 15-Mile,Peg, on December 24, 1925; that lady died on January 16 of injuries owing to the same cause.” The jury were of opinion, that Mrs Cattanach was guilty of culpable in allowing a passenger to ride on the footboard, thereby taking her attention off the road, and causing the car to fall over a bank. They were of opinion that her service license should be cancelled.
