BUSH FIRES
AUSTRALIAN OUTBREAKS.

SYDNEY, January 28.
Huge bush fires are raging beyona Murrumbidgee. A strong wind is driving the flames towards the confluence of the Cotton and the Murrumbidgee rivers, and if the fire crosses the river, then the bush around the Cotton dam. and the great pine plantations on Mount Stromb, wijl be in grave danger, and Canberra will be ■threatened. Volunteers from Canberra have been sent to the scene of the outbreak.
Fires are also raging in the Bathurst district, and are causing heavy damage.
LATER
The bush fire has now passed the Murrumbidgee and is approaching the north-west slopes of Mount Strombo on the slopes of which are pine plantations, costing huge sums, and on the top of which is the Commonwealth Observatory. Men are being gathered from all parts of the district and rushed to- the scene.
VICTORIAN DAMAGE.
MELBOURNE, January 28.
Bush fires are raging in the Eastern Ranges, causing extensive ’ damage. The residents are fleeing before the flames.
