COMMERCIAL

BUTTER AND ' CHEESE.

Messrs A. H. Turnbull and Co., Christchurch, report:—

The butter market has made an advance during the past fortnight which has surprised all sections of the'jtrade. The Danish strike, with the consequent up of Danish shipments to United Kingdom was just sufficient to turn the market in favour of sellers and together with the very hot and dry weather which has been experienced throughout the Northern Hemisphere during the last fortnight, was- sufficient to cause buyers in the United Kingdom some uneasiness witA regard to the future position. The general feeling now is that the butter market will remain firm between now and the arrival of the new’ season’s produce from the Southern Hemisphere. The cheese market has also firmed considerably, increased consumption .being induced by hot weather, and prospects for the future arrivals are good.

Forward buyers of both butter and cheese have increased their limits considerably and this fact confirms the general belief that both butter and cheese markets will remain firm for some time to come. There is always the danger when supplies are being held off the market of curtailing consumption by forcing, above the natural level and then causing a slump when holders decide to realise.
