The body of Annie MacFarlane, single, 49 years of ago, was washed up by the tide at. Lawyer’s Head on Saturday morning. The deceased had been housekeener for Mr. Vaugtrey, of Mos•r’el. She was seen at the house on Wedrusday last. Her movements since then were not known. An inquest was opened on, Saturday evening, when evidence of identification was given. DUNEDIN, June 2!». MOTORIST’S GRIEVANCE NAPIER, June 26

The North Island Motor .Union is to be asked to take action in the case of a £lO fine for by-law breaking. The Hawke’s Bay Automobile. Association, at a meeting to-day, received a complaint from a local motorist who was fined this amount for driving on the wrong side. tof; the 'road at Cambridge. He characterised the case as one of flagrant injustice and told how the constable had acted in a high-handed manner when taking his name and address. At the same time, he said, a person convicted at Auckland on a charge of technical forgery was fined £5. The Association decided to bring the matter before the Union as a with a request that action be taken.

NEW PLYMOUTH, June 29.

James Scanlan, 19, on the “Herald” reporting staff, disappeared-from near the summit of Paritutu on Sunday afternoon. He- and a companion named Stephenson had undertaken to climb the rock, which is 500 ft high, arid were quite close to the summit when Scanlan, who was an experienced climber, decided to climb round a difficult rock, while- Stephenson took the easier track. When the latter reached the summit, a few minutes later, there was no sign of Scanlan, who apparently had missed his footing and fallen. .

Search parties were- sent.out and two voting men climbed the rock in the darkness, but found no trace. The search was resumed this morning when signs of a fall were found, indicating that thejbody will be found in the sea it the- base of the rock. ‘q

THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL WELLINGTON, June 26

Their Excellencies • the GovernorGeneral and Lady Alice Fergusson bropose to pay official visits to. Wanganui and New Plymouth during the week commencing; July 13. It will be recalled that visits to these centres, which had been arranged for March last, had to be abandoned on account of the prevalence of infantile paralysis. Their Excellencies expect to leave for ••Auckland on July 32 to fulfil various engagements, among them being the laying of the foundation stone of ,the Auckland War Memorial Museum by the GovernorGeneral. Their Excellencies ’ will return to Wellington on July 24. From July 31 to. August 3, the GovernorGeneral, accompanied by her Excellency, has ’arranged to visit Picton, Blenheim, and Nelson. Among his Excellency's functions at Nelson will be the laying of the foundation-stone of the new Cathedral on August 2.

DUNEDIN EXHIBITION

WELLINGTON, June 26.

A statement which amounted to an undertaking that the Goye’.nnient will give local bodies authority spend money upon district courts at the Dunedin and South Seas Exhibition was made by the Acting-Minister of Industries and Commerce (Hoii. G. J. Anderson) to-d/y. “I know what you want,” said Air Anderson, as soon as the deputation entered his room. “You are busy men, and so am I. You want authority for local bodies to spend money on the Exhibition. Well, 1 am going to ask Cabinet to give that authority.Does that fix you, gentlemen?” The spokesman replied in the affirmative, adding that the sooner the authirity was given the better they would be pleased.

The Minister said that he would brin<r the matter before Cabinet at its next meeting, to-day or to-morrow. He lead to the deputation a draft clausegiving the necessary authority, providing that an overdraft incurred in respect to contributions to the Dunedin Exhibition should not be regarded.as •in overdraft which is subject to the Imitations of the Local Bodies FiniiKc.
