- (Our Own Correspondent.) WESTPORT, June 26. At St. Peter’s Vicarage, Granity, on Tuesday afternoon, Miss Eileen McKnight, who is shortly leaving the district to enter the nursing profession, was farewelled by a number of friends and presented with a leather suitcase as a mark of their high esteem and warm regard. Miss McKnight suitably replied. During the afternoon games were held, Mrs McDonald being the

winner. Vocal solos and duets were contributed by Mesdames Walsh, Tapp, Brown and Battersby? pianoforte sows by Mrs Brown and Miss Amy' Tapp, ’Mr and Mrs Sam Paul, of the Club Hotel, celebrated the 23rd anniversary of their marriage, by an invitation gathering in the liotel on Wednesday evening. Dancing was held in the new Commercial room, with songs interspersed by Messrs Alf. Wheatley, 1. Parkes, and V. Paul. Later, all seating accommodation in; the big dining room was fully occupied by guests, who sat down to a sumptuous supper., Mr H. I’. Lawry presided and proposed the health of Mr and Airs Paul, congratulating them on celebrating 23 years of married happiness and offering their best wishes for their future. Airs Paul cut up a beautiful three-tier cake, and made a distribution among the guests. Surmounting the cake was a handsome silver rose bowl, the gift of Airs Frank' Alason, of the Alasonic Hotel, Nelson, who was one of the guests on the happy occasion. Numerous toasts were honoured, including that of the best man, Air J onah Reed, who was present in a seat of honour beside Air Paul. Three hockey matches were played yesterday, a men’s match, United v. St. John, which was Avon by the latter by 4 goals to 2, and two ladies’ matches. School met Westport and suffered defeat by one goal to nil. It was a game with plenty of possibilities, School missing plenty of opportunities to score. Westport also just failed to add to the one goal by which they won the match. As Westport is now four points ahead of School and Ramblers, that team is almost certain to be winning the town section, and to play off in the final -with the winner of the country section. Ramblers and Uniteds played a. drawn match I *, /neither side scoring. An enjoyable evening was held at St. Canice’s Club, on Wednesday, on. behalf of the Far East Fund, which should benefit considerably by the takings. Airs Boswell is leaving to-day on return to Nelson. During her stay in Westport she disposed of one of her l three houses, the buyer being Air Frank Grimes, who becomes the owner of the Russell Street property. The state of Air Thomas Al’cKenzie’s health is causing anxiety to his friends. Messrs Arthur, Fred and Lionel Bayfield are due to arrivp this weekend on a visit to their mother, whose health is in a low state. Air F. A. AlcGrath, of Wellington, has been appointed to the Harbour Office staff; and will arrive in Westport on July 1. Air Thropp, a. member of the New Zealand Hockey Association, is being invited to referee the match at Westport between Buller and Australia next month. Air F. Roche has been appointed delegate by the 'Westport Jockey Club to intend the Country Clubs’ conference to be held in Wellington on July 7.
