LAKE BRUNNER NOTES

(Our Own. Correspondent).

Tlih kffig spell of dry weather and the consequent scarcity Of WMeh has occasioned a considerable amount of inconvenience to residents and saw A milibrs in this district. Water for household purposes is being carrigd, in some instances a considerable distance, while that required for industrial purposes i§ iff Very short supply. A. g&bd downpour of rain would now be< very welcome. The outlook in the timber trade here does not appear too bright rtt present orders for fed aiid White pine not being very brisk. Some of the sawmills aYe not working to their full capacity, i ' A number of workers in one of the mills here have decided to® tffiffimence sawmilling 6ft their own account, ahd have formed a party for that purpose. A valuable area of bush

has been secured in the Grey Valley and the necessary machinery haS been purchased) A Press report of a recent iiieetihg of. the Canterbury Education float’d intimates that a letter was received from the Moatta School Committee agreeing to the Board’s proposal to establish a new school midway between flu Ru and Moana. Members of the Committee when questioned) stated that such a proposal has never been submitted tb them, for discussion at their meetings, and those who ail! familiar with the locality are t|uite unaware of the existence Of any suitable site for the purpose. During the past few months a considerable amount of work has been carried out at both the Ru Ru and Moana schools the grounds and fences in particular having received much very necessary attention. At Moana it has been necessary to have- a road constructed to give access? to the school, in view of the increased dan- . gers of using the Railway line for that purpose. Good progress is being

made with the Moana-Ru Ru road by Messrs Ingram Bros., who have' the contract, butt although another 33 chains will have been completed the road will still be too far from Ru Ru to be of any service to the district and it will be necessary to have another section completed before any benefit is derived. A euchre tournament is held weekly at Te Kinga’and provides interesting pastime for a large number of players.. The proceeds are to be devoted to the funds of the Catholic Presbytery and the Committee of Management are Messrs Manzori, Robinson, Morrisey, McNamara, and Adler. Other entertainments during the week included Fred Foley, who visited, this district many years ago, and who again pleased a large audience. For some unknown reason of late a number of strange birds have from time to time, made their appearance in the vicinity of Lake Brunner. They are of different varieties and have not previously been seen here. An interesting visitor who has spent the last three or four weeks round the shores of the. lake is a beautiful white heron, which divides its time between Te Kinga and Moana. The bird is very quiet and is much sought after by the amateur photographer posing quite gracefully for the camera. Mr. H. McCarthy of Te Kinga Football team who sustained an injury to his hand during the progress of a match a fortnight ago, is still incapacitated, but progressing towards recovery. A mishap occurred to a small boy at Ru Ru a couple of days ago. A quantity of carbide with which he was playing, exploded and burned him rather severely about the face and hands.
