Final arrangements were •made and various reports stated that the indications pointed to a very successful function. MAIN HIGHWAYS COUNCIL. A meeting of the No. 12 District Council was held in the Public Works Offices last evening. Present: Messrs H. Watkinson (chairman), D. Evans (Westland County), J. Higgins (Grey County), L. J. Bell (Inangahua County). , . ■ It was suggested that when re ph’. ln o to the Board regarding the classification of the roads in the No. 12 district a request be made that the roads classified as “second class” be calculated to carry six, instead of eight ton loads. . , a Regarding remuneration for the Secretary of the Council, Buller and Inangahua County Councils refused to contribute, Westland stated its willingness to contribute an equitable share, and Grey deferred the matter till their next meeting. The Chairman state that a remuneration of £25 was a reasonable sum. It was resolved 0 apply to each of the County Councils for a proportion di the amount (viz., £6/5/. for each county). , The Chairman stated he could not undertake secretarial work owing to pressure of his other duties, and theie was nothing for it, but to pay for the service, which was being performed by one of his staff. The Chairman stated that the Mam Highways Board had refused to make a grant of £2OO to the Grey Borough for maintenance of the Omoto road. He also stated that there was a probability of the Public Works Department taking over the maintenance of the main road from the Big Grey River to Reefton. If this eventuates, the Department will have charge of the main road right to Westport. It was resolved that the South Island Counties’ representative on the Highways Board (Mr J. D. Bruce), be invited to visit the West Coast and get into touch with the various requirements of the district. The Chairman read out a list of tentative estimates for the ensuing year, totalling £75,600 (against a total of £35,000 last year). The amount in. eluded the following principal sums for maintenance :—Westport-Karamea road, 68 miles, £4000; Westport-Nel-son, 144 g miles, £4500; InangahuaReefton, 21 miles, £1370; ReeftonBig Grey, 12 miles, £1200; Big GreyTeremakau, 33|- miles, £3415; RossWaiho, 69 miles, £4940; Arthur’s Pass-Kumara, 44 miles, £2640. It was agreed that the Chairman and Mr Higgins go through the estimates and plan the work to be done in the order of urgency. Mr Bell reported that a portion of the Reefton, main road, from the Railway Station. to the County Chambers had been tar-sealed at a cost of £132 9/3, which runs out at 3d per square yard, and was holding its surface, notwithstanding the heavy traffic the road was subjected to. Tjie upkeep was estimated at £lO per annum. With the appliances provided by the County Engineer, from six to eight chains had been sealed in one day. The Chairman said so ihuch money was’required for necessary works that he could not hold out any hope of Imoney being secured for tar-sealing. Mr Bell (Inangahua) pointed out, that Mr F. W. Furkert, the Chairman 1 of the Board, had been reported recently as having stated that the South Island had not applied for anything like its quota. In view of that state, ment, it was. strange that the No. 12 Council could get nothing out of the Board. The position was a serious handicap to the progress of the district. 1 ' The. Chairman : “£35,000 last year; £75,600 this year; total £110,600 in two years. Surely that is not “nothing” Mr Bell!” TOUR OF SOUTH ISLAND. The South Island Motor Union recently wrote to Mr W. H. Wynyard, motorists’ representative on the Alain Highways Board, suggesting that that . gentleman should make a tour ol: the South Island with a viejv to acquaint, ing himself with motorists' requirements in respect of roads. Mr Wynyard has replied as follows : “I am interested in what you say and may mention that members of the Board have given contemplation to a tour of the South Island. It will not be possible for me to go further south but I' will ascertain at the, Board meeting this week when the South Island tour can be arranged, and I will let you know what has been settled. I recognise the need for familiarising oneself with the reading conditions in all parts of the Dominion. “As to the interests of motorists generally, you may be assured that they are by no means neglected. Regarding the condition of individual roads, the Board is taking up the question of the proper maintenance with those local bodies, both in the North and South Islands, who are not carrying it out in a satisfactory manner. It is not possible, of course, to know, unless complaints are made, all such cases, and I would suggest that your union, or any motor association, should advise the Board of any instances where you consider that the roads are being neglected. In such case the Board will obtain a report from its local representatives and if the circumstances justify the. complaint action would be taken in the direction of requiring in ore adequate maintenance. ’ ’
