REEFTON NOTES
(Our Own Correspondent). REEFTON, April 29. Mr S. J. Collett, chief clerk of the Government Tourist Department, accompanied by Mr Watson, County Engineer, of Murchison, arrived in Jleefton from the Maruia Springs \last"' night. Mr Collett has been on a visit , to the lesser known resorts of the-Nel-son and West Coast districts, and prior to visiting Maruia went to 'Takaka and inspected the caves there and the famous Pu Pu Springs, 'said to be the largest fresh water spring in the world. From Takaka Mr Collett went on to Lake Rotoroa and was much impressed with the beauty of the lake. The road in however needs a lot of work (lone to it- and requires improving. brom Murchison Mr Collett, in company with Mr Watson,-' County Engineer, of . Murchison, went on to the Maruia Springs, and was greatly .surprised and pleased with the excellent bush and river scenery en route. The springs themselves will, in Mr Collett’s opinion, undoubtedly come into prominence in the future, that is when the road is built and better accommodation is available, and as the population increases the number of visitors,
will assuredly increase also. The party returned via the MaruiaReefton road, which Mr Collett thinks though at present somewhat .rough, compares very favourably with some of the better known scenic routes, and expressed himself welj pleased with his trip, and he holies to make the beauties df the journey better known on his return to headquarters. Mr Collett left for Greymouth this morning en route to Christchurch and Dunedin, at which latter place he is making arrangements for the display of the Tourist Department at the forth- u coming International Exhibition. During last evening Mr Collett was interviewed’by the members of the Progress League on various matters in connection with making the district and its attractions better known. These were discussed, and suggestions were put before the League by Mr Collett for advertisement of the district and its surroundings. Advice was received in Reefton of the death at Kaponga, Taranaki, of Mr William Schwaiters, formerly a resident of Reefton. Deceased had been ill for some time, but his death w;n unexpected. He was employed for many years mining in this iocalitv, and leaves a widow and three children. Mrs Schwaiters was a daughter of the late J. P. Thomas, of Upper Broadway.
