KUMARA NOTES

- (Own Correspondent.) KUM ARA, Sept. 13. Whilst, motor cycling through Dillman’s last Sunday afternoon, a young man named Frank Mclntosh, in lus endeavour to give two pedestrians a wide berth, managed to get too near the edge of the road, with the result that the machine was overturned. McIntosh received a cut and some severe bruises. For the past week, the Kumara Borough Council has had two lorries carting, and a gang of men spreading gravel in Main Street, from th©, foot j)f Sandy’s Hill to Seddon Street, with the result that that particular piece of road is now in better order tWm it has been for some considerable time. Mr M. Nicholas, who last week was reported critically ill, is now on the way to recovery. Kumara, like mostly every other town in the Dominion, has its quota of thieves, and unfortunately these im. viduals, who ply their calling mostly under cover ol darkness, generally escape detection. Kumara can boast a variety of thieves. For instance, there is the garden thief, who steals his neighbour’s cabbages; the petty thief will steal anything he' can get his hands on —nothing is too hot or heavy for him; then there is the thief who fills in lii,s spare time in robbing the graves of the dead, an instance of which took place a few days ago hi the cemetery, when a number of shells which had been placed by. loving hands on a. child's grave, were stolen. More recently still, a resident of the town, went down the Zig Zag to get • some pipe clay, taking with him a long-handled spade and a pick, -which, after using, he planted in the bush till the following morning, when he returned to find them gone. Needless to say, his good wishes are extended to the new owner of the (tools, who he trusts will live long enough to wear them out. The children of the Kumara Public School were examined by the Inspector, on Thursday last. The S.M. and Warden’s Court will hold a sitting on Wednesday next.
