ANOTHER JUDGE

CANTERBURY SUPPORT

(Special to “Star.”)

CHRISTCHURCH, September 20.

The Canterbury Law Society is strongly in favour of' the appointment of an extra Judge for the Can lei bury Judicial district, as embodied in the resolution passed by the Hokitika branch of the Westland Law Society. Before the Hokitika branch had expressed its opinion, the Council of the Canterbury Society had sent a telegram to the Acting Prime Alinister, Sir F. Bell, with the request that two Judges should be appointed to Christchurch.

Advice has been received that the matter has been laid before the Chief Justice, Si>- R. Stout, who in turn will place it before the Judges. “I certainly say that the requirements of the Canterbury and Yest Coast district amply warrant the appointment of another Judge,” said Mr. IL Wilding, K.C. “To my knowledge, Mr. Justice Adams and Air. Justice Reed have been working at an extremely high pressure. 1 here is no doubt that'the Judges here are overworked. 'l’he public generally does not realise that a Judge’s work is not finished when he rises irom the Bench.”

'The President of the Canterbury Law Society, Mr. F. W. Johnston, asked for his persona! opinion said: “If .judges were not so overworked, and had a little more leisure, there would not be so many breaking down in health.” Air. O. T. J. Alpers said that, the Canterbury Law Society supported very strongly the Hokitika resolution. The Christchurch work would fully occupy the time of a resident Judge, without if being disturbed by the Court of Appeal, and sessions at Timaru and the West Coast.
