RACING NEWS AND NOTES. (By “Arlington.”) L’Amour and Sunny Loch are the ruling favourite for the Winter Cup, both riguring at a short price, while Boadicea, Carmine, Avispado and Kilbird are tiie next in order of favouritism. Of the bunch, the writer would take Avispado as being the hardest to beat. Poanui is the shortest-priced horse at present in the Grand National Hurdles, but on recent form he cotl'ld be passed over in favour of some of tiiose rower down. Penury Rose and General Petain are a useful combination engaged at the Grand National Meeting, both being proved stayers and gooa jumpers. Tne locally-owned Elixir is now under the care of trainer W. McKendry at Omoto, and will be got ready for summer racing. This painstaking young trainer is well versed in the art of getting his charges fit, and it should not be long beiore he has a good string under liis care at Omoto. Tiie Reeiton pair of trotters in Golden Denver and Denver Wood are freely engaged at the Canterbury Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Meeting. Jennings, the Westport trainer, who met with a good deal of success last season, will have a fair-sized string to handle during th© coming season. Included in tiie lot will be Rapid Eire, Kuia, War Unit, Weary Willie, Emerald Gem and Demonstrate.

The Earl of Roseberry, who recently won the Two Thousand Guineas with Ellangowan, -was 76 years of age on DI ay 7 th. A London exchange says the story r is often told how in his Eton days the Earl remarked that his three ambitions were to wed an heiress, attain the rank of Prime Minister, and win the Derby, and these ambitions were duly satisfied in every instance.
