EARTHQUAKE

A SHARP SHOCK.

What is stated to be one of the most sex ere earthquakes felt since 1888 was experienced in Greymouth about 1.30 a.m. to day, the tremors lasting about thirty seconds. The “shake” was very pronounced, but the vibrations were even and not of a violent nature, although quite sufficient to awaken residents and “put the wind up” some of them. Scientific records of the direction and force of the earthquake are not available, tTlere being no instruments in Greymouth for recording such phenomena. Hokitika, it is understood, possesses such instru- I ments, as also does Nelson. The fact that the shock was experienced at Hokitika at 1.40 a.m. appears to indicate the general direction as being from north to south. The shock will no doubt be reported from other parts of the Dominion. Minor damage only occurred in Greymouth. IN OTHER PARTS. • AT HOKITIKA. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) HOKITIKA, This Day.
