COBDEN TOWN BOARD

ADDRESSES Bi CANDIDATES. There was a poor attendance at the puoiic meeting heid last night in Carter’s Hall, Cod don, when Messrs Greenwood and Turley addressed those present upon Labour's representation upon the Cpbden Town Board. 'The imperative necessity of a good .water -supply and drainage were touched upon as well as an extension of the gas service. These would iftvolve the necessity of a loan, the proposed raising of which would require the sanction of the ratepayers. Unimproved values as the basis for imposing rates was favoured, provided the revenue was safeguarded. Mr Turley asked as to whether he would favour the raising of- hotel licenses to £4O annually, replied in the affirmative, provided the business warranted it- A number /Of questions were answered, after which'other'candidates for election honors were invited to address the meeting. Mr Barrett said he stood before them as a member x nf the Ratepayers’ Association. His reason for allowing himself to be nominated for a seat on the Town Board was because he thought it only right to continue the good work the Association had begun and be game enough to see it through. The Association had gone carefully into details in deciding upon local control, and were confident that they could carry on with present rates. The first thing they wanted was drainage, but they could not have this without an efficient water supply. He favoured a conference of local bodies and engaging the highest engineering ability to report upon the project of bringing in a water- supply from the Ten Mile Creek to serve Cobden, Greymonth and others who may desire connection. In this way the cost would bo spread and would not fall heavily upon any single body. They had a footpath in the main street, but footpaths in other streets were badly required. Preliminaries would first engage their attention, and UieV must “find their feet” and proceed slowly but surely. He hoped that the e-eetors would show their interest to-day by .recording their votes. The poll closes at six o’clock to-night, end it is expected that the results will be known about half-past seven.
