CHILDREN’S ALLOWANCES

APPLICATIONS INVITED. Tlierc is money waiting for at least a few returned soldiers in tire Greymouth district. A ‘‘Greymouth Evening Star” reporter was gxven a letter, wjuch has been received by the local repatriation officer, which explains itself and reads as follows. It is from the N Officer-in-Charge, War Expenses, Wellington Applications for retrospective Children s allowance on behalf of returned soldiers have not been received as freely as anticipated, the explanation no doLibe being that in the majority of such cases, those eligible for the grant have not been made aware of the'fact. With a view to bringing the matter prominently under tire notice of the public generally, the Department is endeavouring to advertise the grant as widely as possible, and it is therefore desired to seek the assistance of your organisation in effectually representing the matter to returned soldiers resident in /your district whoso children are entitled to benefit by the payment. It is felt that this course will have the desired effect and enable this office to dispose of the balance of the claims witliin-a reasonable time; thereby avoiding the inconvenience to all parties concerned which will inevitably result from belated applications. I enclose copies of posters dealing with the subject and which it will be noted include a reference to claims for the payment of the difference between expeditionary rate of pay and the territorial rate received for the first month in tamp prior to August, 1916; and I shall be pleased if you will have these displayed at your office in a position where they will bo calculated to attract attention of married returned soldiers with whom your organisation may be connected in any manner.
