SPORTING NEWS

THE GRAND NATIONAL. WEIGHTS DECLARED. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, July 19. The following weights have been declared : WINTER CUP. 1 mile

racing news and notes. (By “Aeronaut.”) With the weights cut. Master Strowaii looks a bigger “cert” than ever for the Grand National Steeplechase. Though this scribe has not had time yet to carefully puruse tbe above weights, it would look as if Sir Fisher has been given a great chance in the Hurdles. He is, perhaps, the best stayer at present racing over the hurdles,in the Dominion. Sleight of Hand, Sir Fisher, Collector, Colorado, Reformation, Yellow and Black, and Waimai have arrived at Riccarton. Tip Up, with only 21b. above the minimum, will keep the best of them moving when the winning post for the Winter Cup is in sight. Stan Reid will probably have charge of the steering gear on Collector in the National Steeplechase, while Hector Gray will have the mount on Hydrus in the Winter Cup. Pursefiller is a doubtful starter at Riccarton. Reformation, who is engaged in Ihe National Hurdles with 9st., is not astayer. Kauri King’s name will he found among the missing after the first payments for Ibo National. IMorecambe, who is amongst those weighted for this year’s Grand National Hurdles, has been off the scone since he fell in the Great Northern

Steeplechase won by Gluepot, this |)eing the Birkenhead gelding's only start for three years. He has been a good but unlucky horse as a jumper. He won the Trial Hurdles at Riccarton, where he also ran second to Royal Anns in the Grand National Hurdles. He was then, put by until the following winter, when he ran third in the Great Northern Hurdles to El Gallo and Tragedy King, and second in the Great Northern Steeples to El Gallo. Morecam be will be given a run at the South Canterbury Hunt Club’s Meeting next week. The local owner, Mr. D. 11. Roberts, has every reason to feel proud of the position he holds on the winning list of owners for the season just ending, as bv the aid of Fiery Cross, Glendower and Co , his banking account has been increased at the rate of £IOO per week. Glendower, one of the most promisingmembers of the team, will receive a special preparation for the New Zealand Cup. The imported horses Day Comet and Archiestown, purchased in England by the South Auckland Country Breeders’ Association, have arrived in Wellington after a good trip. Day Comet, winner of the Prince of Wales Stakes at Goodwood as a two-year-old, was foaled in 1910. He is a" chestnut horse by St. Frusquin from Catgut, by Lactanius - Catkin, by Dog Rose, by See-Saw. Ho is a full brother to Qubiologist (a successful performer in New South Wales) and Planet, who this season ran second in the Manchester Cup. Archiestown, who has Avon both on the flat and over hurdles, was foaled in 1912. Ho is a chestnut horse by Sir Archibald (by Desmond, son of St. Simon), from Catchwood. Day Comet, who was bred Air. E de Rothschild, has been at the stud in the Old Country, and Avas represented last season by one or two two-year-olds. The See-Saw mentioned above in Day Comet’s perigree is also the sire of Rubczahl, imported by the late Sir George McKean, also sire of Beauharnis (dam of Soult). As a three-year-old. ArchiestoAvn Avon the Easter Plate, of 1000 sovs., at Kempton Park. St. El run lias been an unlucky per former in jumping races this season. He has been placed on five occasions in important races, and secured 570 sovs. in place money. Unfortunately be has been lame since racing at Wellington, and may have to forfeit his Riccartou engagements. Moddite. Meltchikoff, and Notability, in charge of 15. J. Rae,.have arrived at Riccarl on. The reason Avhy Giralda did not start at Trentham Avas that he knocked himse'f Avhilo working one morning prior to Hie meeting. Giralda avj'll be a starter at the South Canterbury Hunt Aleeting, and so will Fleetham and Sylva, the other two members of Pat. Hogan’s team. Sylva is a New South Wales bred gelding by Sylvanite, and Avas among the Avinners at Riverton at Easter. For several Avinters past Costello, the Hastings trainer, has been Avell represented at the jumping meetings by Corazon, Nadador, and Braeburn, Avho have between them placed most of the important cross-country events in tbo Dominion to ihe credit of their oAvners. Costello has taken Ormesby back to Hastings with him, the Birkenhead gelding having been purchased by Air. IT. A. Russell. Two sons of Carbine, in Carbinier and Amberite, sired the Avinners of the two last races for the Y.R.C. Grand National Hurdles, and on Saturday last another son, Buudook Ava.s represented by Cobram, the Avinnev of the V.R.C. Grand National Steeplechase. Buudook (Carbine —Atoonga) Avas a full brother to Alongonui, and half-brother to Seahorse, Zealous, Rattler, and Powerful. Cobram Avas in Die Flemiiiglon race Avith 91b. above the minimum, and Avas in receipt of 501 b. from Booligal, avlk> carried 12st. into third place in the same race two years ago. Cobram is a grey gelding, and is oAvned by Air. EL Connolly, a Avail -known Victorian oavucr of jumping boi-ses.
