OBITUARY, li, is with regret 1 have to report the death ,of another pioneer of the West Coast in the person of Mrs. Ann Johnston, who passed away at her residence, Kokatahij on Thursday. The deceased had reached the age of 80 years, and was a well-known and highly respected resident of the dis-

trict. Her husband predeceased her some years ago. The deceased lady leaves a grown-up family of three daughters and one son to mourn their Joss. Of these Mr. Hugh Johnston and one sister reside at Kokatahi. Out of respect for the relatives .of the late Mrs. Johnston the social set down for last night to Private AY. Fleming will now be held on Monday night, when a big attendance is expected to be present. RAIN AND SUNSHINE. The rainfall for the ten days from September 17th to 26th (inclusive) has totalled iust on 12 inches, which is

more than has fallen in any month this year with the exception of March, when 12.54 inches of rain fell —only hali'-an-inch more. More rain fell on the ten days than fell in January and February combined. Five days of the ten averaged over 2 inches a day, and on two days (25th and 26th) nearly 5i inches of rain fell. Needless to say the sunshine on these days was rather scarce, Saturday, 22nd., recording 5 hours, being the best.
