ARRANGING A SETTLEMENT. A TRIBUNAL SET UP. (Per Press Association.J WELLINGTON, September 26, The Prime Minister has written to the Seamen’s Union, stating that lie lias approached AI r. Justice Cooper with a view to his acting as chairman of a tribunal to deal with the seamen’s
dispute. AI r. Justice Cooper lias expressed Ids willingness to act. The, board will consist of the chairman and a representative from each side. The Union held a meeting and decided to nominate Unplain Stringer, of the Government Shipping Office, as its representative. The Union expresses the wish that the tribunal shall hear representatives of (he seamen and take evidence in respect of the matter prior
lo giving its decision and that representatives of the press shall be present to publicly record the proceedings. The Union added that its agreement for a tribunal was conditional on the prosecutions pending against the Union officials being either withdrawn or determined, and no action will be taken by the Union until either eventuates. The Shipowners’ Federation lias forwarded a reply to Mr. Massey agreeing that the dispute he referred ’to a
board, but statins; that if the inquiry was to deal with all the matters in dispute it will be necessary to provide two representatives for each side. The Federation suggests that all matters in dispute should bo referred to the board, that two representatives should be appointed by each side, and. that the union should formulate its demands in writing and undertake that its members will resume work immediately the. board's decision is made known
