MEETING OF COMMITTEI
Tho Cobden Bridge Committee mot yesterday afternoon. Messrs H. I • Doogau (Chairman), J. D. Lynch and Coitie represented the- Borough Council, and Messrs M. Hannan and. J. Ryall the County Council. Messrs JD. Gillies, J. Higgins., and W. J. O’Donnell, local body Engineers, were also in attendance. A communication wasi received from the Minister of Public Works in reply to a. request that the Government agree to the payment of LGOO to the contractor in consideration of the latter’s immediately taking over the bridge and accepting the,.responsibility for maintenance and repairs of the whole of the bridge. The Minister pointed out that local bodies were entirely responsible for the maintenance of the bridge, and regretted he was unable to sec Ids way to find any money for maintenance work as suggested, or allow Government payments to be made to the contractor as an extra to the contract. No objection, however, would be made to the local bodies making arrangements with the contractor to attend to the
