AUCKLAND,. February 21. —A five roomed house on the Carlton Core road was destroyed by tiro early this morning. An occupant, Miss O'Connor, 82 years of age, was rescued by .Constable Collins, who dashed through the burning building, ,at considerable risk. Miss O’Connor is jn fho hospital suffering from burns. The house was owned and occupied by Mrs, Lefaneo and her daughter, who’ escaped in their night attire.

METHODIST CONFERENCE. WELLINGTON, February' 22—The fifth annual conference of the Methodist Church of Now Zealand opened’ tee-night. There were about 240 delegates present, representing all parts of the Dominion. The President, Ret. A. C. La-wry, presided and delivered liist retiring address- Tlie Rev. W. A, Sinclair, of Christchurch, was elected president with 153 votes, Mr. J. Veale vice-president with 112 votes, and Rev. E. Drake was elected secretary. The new officer,: were installed and the Conference adjourned.

The financial position was satisfactory. Messrs S. W. Holmes, S. Jickell, and Cyrus J. R. Williams were appointed to fill vacancies on the Council. The following resolution was passed :“That in view of the early balloting of the Second Division the Defence authorities bo urged to make the best possible use of civil engineers who mre (either' balloted for or voluntarily enlist by giving them the opportunity if serving as noncommissioned officers or otherwise in engineering, artillery,, or other technical branches of the service.
