STATEMENT HST THE WK. W. FRASER. ~ . The Hon. W. Fraser (Minister for Public Works) stated on Saturday; that. he had received" the official report as, to what caused the strike at Hie ptira tunnel (as reported in Saturday’s issue). One of the men at the Bealey end of the Otira tunnel was reported to the engineer-in-charge for having used insulting and obscene language to the overseer, and was thereupon dismissed. Then the rest of the men came out, and declared that unless 1 the man was reinstated they would cease work. The engineer declined )to reinstate the man* but reported to the Minister.“My instructions were,” .said the Hon. W. Fraser, “that the man should not be reinstated; I cannot permit the men to take charge of.the works i'n that way. ” ,The men, he would have to make up their minds prety soon. The present position could not go, on inde- ' finitely, and he hoped that wiser counsels would soon prevail.
