PERSONAL NOTES.
Mr Felix Campbell, Chairman of the Greymouth Harbor Board, will return to town from Wellington to-night. Mr J. Butler, of the State mine, has successfully passed his examination as a first-class stationary engine-driver. The examination was held last Monday under the supervision of Mr P. McKenzie, Inspector of Machinery.
The many friends of Mr. J. Cox, the well-known commercial traveller for Hardie's wines, will regret to hear of his death, which occurred some three weeks ago. Mr M. Malone has been selected 1 to represent'! the teachers of the Grey District at the annual,conference of the New Zealand Educational Institute. The conference will be held in,Wellington during the present month. Mr W. Lowes, who was successful in floating the Bonanza gold mine in Sydney last year, has resigned his position i>s manager of the Bonanza Co., and returns to Sydney in August with two or three other West Coast propositions for flotation.
.Mr Young Saye, who has been a resident of Greymouth for the past 30 years, ten of which have been spent in, the management of the firm of Kwong Gee Yuen and Co., Chinese merchants, has disposed of the business to Chow Hing. It is Mr Young .Saye's intention to leave Greymouth with his family in about five weeka for China, their future home. The following are among the passengers expected to reach Greymouth from Christchurch to-night, having made the coach portion of. the journey with Cassidy and Co. : Messrs Broad, O'Domiell, Lang., Thompson, Ring, Campbell, Williams, Chiveis, Warne, Park, Packer, Holley, Hammers, Stey, Jones, Byers, Jones (3), James, and Dr Teichelman ; Mesdames Cooke, Laird, Dolomore, Grift'en, O'Donnell and Thompson; Miss McGee. Mrs Bridget O'Keefe, a native of County Waterford, Ireland, passed away at her residence, Westport, on Monday at the ripe old age of 76 years. Decease for many ye&vs lived at Addison's, bemg there at the first of the rush. Her husband predeceased her by some years. She is survived by a family of five sons ai-d two daughters, the latter being Mrs Skilton and Mrs R. Atkinson. Mr Kirby is resigning his position en the staff of the Westport District ffigh School, and removing to Otago, where he has received an appointment.
At the dispersing of the District High at Reefton "on Tuesday a pleasing ceremony took place, when the following testimny was presented by the scholars to Mr G. A. Lundie, M.A., who is relingtiishing his position to take up scholastic work elsewhere: "Dear Sir.—Prior to your departure from our midst, we, the pupils of the High School, wish to present you with this small gift as a token of the esteem in which you have been held while you were with us. We regret to lose you from our presence, but our loss is another school's gain. We sincerely hope tha you will be as successful in your new sphere as you have been here." The testimonial was signed unanimously by all his pupils. Subsequently Misses -Tudehope and Panckhurt, on behalf of the scholars, presented Mr Lundie with .*>■ beautiful silver inkstand and holder.
