WHAT IS HEAVEN?

SERMON BY BISHOP OF AUCKLAND. f.T TELEGEAPn—PER PRESS ASSOCIATION t .yl AUCKLAND, May 251 Vlie Augluan »b:hop of Auckland. Dr. A. W. Avcrill, preached a sermon at St. Mark's, lkmuera, yesterday morning on "Heaven." The danger of the present day, said the Biihop, was the tendency of people to allow their religion to drift into a vague sentiment, a mystic uncertain belief. He believed, however, there was a general longing-to know something definite about what revealed religion had to teach concerning the future. "What do we mean by 'heaven?' " he asked. The noprlar conception of heaven was about as impossible and unreal as was the popular conception of hell. Heaven was popularly conceived to be little more than a localised place somewhere in space, a place of gbrjrfcd idleness and self-satisfaction. Heuven, said a modern writer, was a perfected social state in which heavenly mindednesß prevai'ed. "It has been said," continued Bishop Avcrill, "that the Christian heaven flows before the telescope and the spectros-opc. Well, that, of course, is simply rubbish. All tho astronomy that the world has ever known or ever will know does not teach the question of the Christian heaven. Heaven is not elevation in soace but altitude of being, perfection of being, Heaven is here and now, and heaven must get into.us beore we get into heaven. It is far more important that heaven should be a present reality to us than a future possibility. Idle curiosity is the woist preparation. Good earnest practical religion is the best preparation for the continuation of life with Jesus."

There was nothing contrary to reason in believing that the spiritual world was present now, declared the Bishop. They believed that there were worlds within worlds. suHi «s the political, social, and and scientific worlds. Let them then be practical and not merely speculative. Let them do what Jesus told them to do and strike a blow at the materialism separating the natural from the spiritual world. Instead of talking about the unhappy relationship between employer and employee let them bring their Christianity to bear upon it instead of criticising merely. They read about the prevalence of divorec and the lack of home influences. Let them set an example and help to create a healthy public opinion on these matters "Start and do something yourselves and you will not only help Christ and the Church but vou will help yourself. Do not mcrelv pray 'Thy Kingdom Come but do something to help it to come. It is here now and waiting to be revealed, said the preacher.
