AUCKLAND, May 26.—The bursting of one of the retorts used for the refining of sulnhur at AVhite Island on Monday, May 18th, resulted in the death of a certificated fireman, Join. Williams. Deceased, who was married, received severe burns and injuries, dying on the', following day. Owing to the heavy weather news of the accident did not reach Auckland earlier. The. retorts at the island have been closed temporarily to enable the cause of the accident to ne investigated.

APPEAL DISMISSED. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The Racing Conference dismissed the appeal of T. Wilson, owner of Manurere and adjudged the horse Harenoa winner'of the Electric Handicap at Te Aroha on March 9th.

When admitted he had influenza, which turned into pneumonia. He was a single man with relatives at Waimate.
