PERSONAL NOTES

A special cablegram to the Star from London states that Sir Joshua Williams yesterday sat on the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council for the first time. Mr L. M*. Isitt, M.P., will arrive in town from Westport to-night and will subsequently address a public meeting in the Town Hall.

We regret to state that Mr. McFarlane (Clerk of Court at Reefton), now an inmate of a private hospital, was in a very low condition last evening. General Hamilton arrived at Pieton today, and is going on to Blenheim this afternoon. He will receive a civic welcome and review the senior cadets. He will also be welcomed by the Scottish Sol ciety.

The engagement is announced of Miss E. Wilson, youugst daughter of Mr F. A. Wilson, of Ferry Road, Christchurch, to .Mr S. W. Moult, youngest son of Mr E.

Moult, Thompson Street,' Wellington. Miss Wilson was a, former resident of Greymonth and Kumara. ■ The death occurred at Ross. Tasmania, recently of the Rev. H. W. Howell, who succumbed suddenly to heart failure. The late Mr Howell ministered for some years in the Wairau portion of the Nelson dio■ese, and both he and his wife made many friends in that district. The deceased was well known in Greymonth, having resided here for years and being universally respected and esteemed.

The detailed results of the Public Service Senior Examination have just come to hand. We find that Master John Cairney of the Greyniouth High School, whose age when he sat for examination was barely 15 years, gained in Latin the magnificent percentage of 86, which was the highest obtained in the Dominion, whilst in geometry and trigometry he gained 84 per cent., being the second highest in these subjects. Master Cairney's average percentage for the whole examination was 73, whereas only two candidates in the whole of New Zealand jbtained a higher percentage.

A large number of Christchurch swimmers met at the Masonic Hotel last Wednesday evening to bid farewell to Mr. G. Rich, inter-club handicapper to the, Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, who has been transferred to Kumara. Mr. W. E. D, Bishop presided, and on behalf of the swimmers conveyed congratulations to Mr. Rich on his appointment, but expressed regret at Iris removal from Christchurch. He referred to the good work done by Mr. Rich while he occupied the position of inter club handicapper, and thanked him for the valuable assistance he had rendered to the various clubs in Canterbury. During the evening Mr. Bishop, on behalf of the Canterbury swimmers, presented Mr. Rich with a stop watch suitably inscribed. Toasts were honoured, and musical items given.— Christchurch exchange.
