RAILWAY WORKSHOPS

TIMARU’S REQUEST REFUSED

(by TELEGRAPH. —PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

TIMARU, This Day

Some years ago a good deal of minor railway rolling stock repairs used to be effected at Timaru, a carpenter’s and a blacksmith’s shop, with the necessary hands, being maintained here.

About 1908 a policy of ,gradually sending all such work to Addington was adopted, and Mr Craigie, member for Timaru, has frequently protested against the- loss of work and workmen to the town. .

Last week he'telegraphed-to the Minister of-Railways a protest against a recent, removal of men.

In reply,- the Minister telegraphs that the-policy was adopted in the interests of, economy, and he regrets that he cannot alter the arrangement. It has been arranged, however, to maintain a store for material and carpenters for bridge work at Timaru. *
