GREYMOUTH JOCKEY CLUB.

THE NOMINATIONS,

The number of horses nominated for the first day of the Easter meeting, which closed last night, proved a record as there were no less than eightynine nominations made for the seven events to be competed for, an average of over twelve for each event. Of these four nominations were received from Blenheim, four from the North Island and six from Christchurch. It is impossible at this stage to give the owner’s names as many of the horses nominated are sent by telegram, particulars as to .ownership, etc., being promised by letter, But the following is the correct list.

TROTTING. (By “Pacer.”) TROTTING FIXTURES. April 1, 5 and B.—Auckland T.C. Autumn It is rumoured that the next Dunedin Cup Trotting Handicap will carry a stake of 500 sovs. If that is really so, the Dunedin Jockey Club can only sustain their dignity by increasing the-stake attached to the Dunedin Cup. By the way, there seems to be a great lack of originality in having two Dunedin cups, to say nothing of two New Zealand cups. The grey gelding, Bushranger, from the West Const, established his reputation as a stayer by winning the Stayers’ Handicap of three miles. - Starting off the 40sec mark, he' soon got his nose" in front, and won comfortably by' nearly fifty yards. Twelve horses started, and this should give encouragement to trotting clubs to put on more long-distance races.—Spectator.

THE PIOUS BOOKMAKER.

STILL GOING STRONG. An Auckland scribe interviewed a wellknown Queen City bookmaker the other day on the operations of the recent Gaming Act ,which has undoubtedly dealt a severe blow to “the profession” by shutting its members off the racecourses and preventing them doing business in their own offices or on the streets. The caller of the odds, however, let his interviewer in on the ground floor. “It isn’t against the law to bet,” he said. ‘We can’t bet in a public bouse or in a street, but we can bet in shops when we happen to meet our clients. And we always know who we are dealing with, and no money passes. As a matter of fact, I’ve done more business since we were put off the course than before. It’s not so expensive as paying £2O a day license fee. You’d be surprised at the range of my customers. They go all the way from Ministers of the Crown to —well, not ministers of the Church—we haven’t got that far yet. But they include all sorts of people down to wharf laborers.” “What do you want to go away for?’ ’he was asked. “I don’t like the method,’ was the rather astonishing reply. “Every customer has a fictitious name. We have to do everything underhand. and it goes against the grain.” After this Diogenes is quite ordinary!
