VALEDICTORY.
PRESENTATION' TO MR W. B. GILBERT. ' A very pleasant-function was held at Mulviliili’s Court House Hotel, Kumara, on Monday evening, when tire Kumara Axemen’s Carnival Committee entertained their late member and secretary, Mr W. B. Gilbert, who is leaving to take up his residence in Greymouth. Mr Mulvihill (President), m making the presentation of a purse of. sovereigns on behalf of the Committee, referred to the excellent work done by Mr Gilbert as ,a member and secretary of the committee, and wished him, Mrs Gilbert and family long life and prosperity in their new home. - , Messrs R .Rouse, J .A .Murdoch, F. Roberts and W .N. Poole endorsed the remarks of the Chairman, and all joined in wishing their guest. Mrs Gilbert and family happiness and prosperity. Mr Gilbert, in responding, said that the pleasant times he had gnent in the committee had been the jolliest of his life. He also made, an explanation re refusing to take a presentation from the public. He had done nothing to warrant a, public presentation and. besides, he knew that people who could ill afford to give would give. In taking the presentation from the committee he said that it was a generous gift of the members of the committee and he would buy semething that would remind him of the good times he had spent on the committee. He thanked the members for the kind words of expression used towards his wife and family.
