MUTUAL IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY.
At the Mutual Improvement Sot. iety's rooms last night, an interesting and instructive meeting was held. Athe night was devoted to a Borough Council campaign and election, tin meeting was declared open and ;■ large number of ladies and gentlcmor assembled together.
The candidates for the Mayoral scat were Messrs Milne, Barrowman am 1 Gilbert and those for the extraordi nary election of two councillors, vara ted by two members fur "bribery and corruption" were Messrs McKnight. Burnett, Shannon, Lindsay, Stewart and Young. After the candidates had advanced" their views and the members had asked the usual questions, some of which were very amusing, the poll was proceeded with. The results were : —Mr Barrowman was elected Mayor and Messrs McKni'jht and Young a: Councillors. After the candidates hac returned thanks to their supporters the meeting closed, everyone pronouncing- it the most successful meeting of the session.
The speeches of the .-andidates especially the juniors, showed v lint good .work the society ; s doing, and in a few years to come it is certain that the society will have excellent material to work on for the Elocutionary Contest.
