DUNEDIN HIGH STREET SCHOOL

(By Telegraph—Special to the Bthj). DUNEDIN, This Day. Matters took quite an unexpected turn at to-night's meeting of householders for the election of a school committee and the meeting ended without tiie attainment of the object for which the meeting assembled. For years past it has been recognised that good work has been done by the Committee of this school and it has got to lie th ■ fashion to elect the retiring members en bloc and to pass votes of thanks to them and the staff. With" ■itch unfailing regularity has this been done that the householders have for the last year or two abstained from attending.

The usual procedure promised to be followed to-night till 'a resolution moved by Captain Stewart "Deepy regretting that the High Street School Committee should have been the onty School Committee in Dunedin that refused when requested bv the Dunedffi United Temperance Reform Council to exhibit placards ill the school making known the detrimental effects m alcohol on the human system" was de clared carried unanimously though only live hands had been held up in lis favour. When members of the old Committee were immediately thereafter proposed for re-election one afr»k another declined. The lead was given bv the Mayor of Dunedin, Mr Walker, who said that a vote of censure had been passed on the late committee and though he had supported the placing of the placards on the school walls (and was consequently iii sympathy with Captain Stewart) loyalty to his colleagues prevented his agreeing to nomination for another year. So many were the refusals' that only five could be prevailed on to accept nomination. These were declared elect, d and the Education Board will have to appoint the remaining four if nut six, because it is anticipated that two of the old Committee who wer elected in their absence through sick-: ness will decline to hold office.
