An interesting break in the monotony of adverse winds and tides came to those on board the four-masted barque .Andromeda a day or two ago in Cook Strait, when a large school of porpui.-es put in an appearance. The crew amused themselves in Irving to harpoon the visitors, and the porpoises invariably prove! the better tacticians. Thev seemed to abound in hun dreds. At last one big member of his species ventured too near the ship, the harpoon was prompt, and before long he was being raised by means of boat-hooks to the deck. The 'captured porpoise Was about six feet in length, weighing nearly a hjindred pound.-. Its flesh'. though course, made a change ill the diet of the crew. Off < lough Island, in the South Atlantic. > members of the ship's company succeeded in capturing three big alPatrosses by means of bait sc, ured to a line following astern. The wing-bones and the thick warm skins were preserved. The flesh is .oar— and unpalatable, though highly esteemed by some Oriental nation-. notahlv the Chinese.
