VISIT TO KUMAR A. On Thursday last, J7ll l inst,. at 1.30 p.in.. His Excellency Lord I'lnnket and partv, accoinpanh d by lion. G. I’owhls (.Minister of Hospitals), arrived in Kll- - His Worship the Mayor with several Councillors and ladies drove as tar as Waimea to meet them. His Excellency and party went as lac as McGrath’s sluicing claim, Dry Hill, immediately after lunch and inspected the process of gold sluicing. On returning to town an adjournment was made to the hospital where a large crowd had assembled and where His Excellency had promised to open IIU new wing.

Air. Seddon, AEP.. introduced Mr. Kennedy, President ot the Hospital Trustees, and said he was pleased to welcome His Excellency to Knmava. Air. Kennedy, in an excellent speech, welcomed His Excellency to the hospital. He regretted that Lady Plunked was not present He, however, desired Hi Excellency to convey to her ladyship the good will of the people of Kiiinara towards her He expressed the pleasure fell by all and the honour done to the institution by His Excellency consenting to allow the wing to be called the Plnnket Ward. He here presented His Excellency with a gold and greenstone key to open the ward. Air. Murdoch also spoke and expressed (he pleasure he felt at being present to welcome Tlis Excellency. He thanked the president for bis references to (he speaker’s action in obtaining the grant for the new ward. The trustees had done the work well and he hoped His Excellency and Hon. Air. I'owdds would be satisfied. He then paid an eloquent tribute to the work done by Lady Plnnket.

The Hon. G. Eowlds was the next speaker. He paid a compliment to the enthusiasm shown by the people of the district in supporting their hispitnl. He said there were districts with a much larger population than Kinnara and they had no hospital, but as long as (be people showed the same enthusiasm in supporting their hospital it would not be closed. He hoped the hospital would continue to meet the requirements of the district. His Excellency thanked the speakers for their kindly references to himself and particularly to Lady Plnnket for the honour done Lady Plnnket and their name in allowing the ward to Innamed after them. He would not- fail to convey to her the kindly expressions of regard for her work and for herself. He had not seen such enthusiasm in hospital matters displayed in any other part of New Zealand. He heartily thanked (hem for the beautiful memento. He would keep it in remembrance of the occasion and he hoped the institution would be the means of alleviating the sufferings of many and saying many from death. His Excellency then turned the key and declared the ■Plnnket Ward open. . Refreshments were then handed

around. His Excellency and party were entertained at a social in the Adel phi Hall ill the evening when an excellent concert, was given. Air and Airs. Cadzow, Alisses Day and, Malfroy and Air. Seddon contributed items. Indeed, it may be said that the concert was one of the best that we have listened to for years. During the evening His Worship the Mayor welcomed His Excellency to Kumara on behalf of the citizens and paid ah eloquent tribute to the work ho and Lady Plnnket had accomplished during their stay in New Zealand. Hon. Mr. Fowlds and Mr. Seddon also spoke a few words, and His Excellency having replied refreshments were handed around and a very pleasant evening came to an end.
