A blast- was fired at the Westport Harbour Board's lower quarry, Cape Foulwind, on Saturday forenoon. It was completely successful in dislodging good stone. Mr R, A. It is currently reported that Messrs H. L Michel and C. J. l'arham, who recently went to Sydney in connection with the flotation of a "mining scheme connected with the Rimu and Seddon's Terrace goldfield, have been very successful in their mission. From what' can be gathered, negotiations have ben carried to such a point that the flotation of a company with a large capital about the middle of the vear senis to be assured. This is very gratifying news indeed, and it is to be hoped that the arrangements will be brought to a satisfactory conclusion as soon as possible. The operations in connection with the J Ross Goldfields claim arc proeeding very satisfactorily. There was a slight_ stopivvje mi Tuesday night, but nothing to seriously ilelav work. When Lord Plunket visited'the shaft on Wednesday, everything was working very smoothly, and there was a very hopeful feeling as to the immediate prospects. The annual St. Patrick's ball held by the Hibernian Society took place last night i ntho Town Hall and was a brilliant .success, there being about three hundred present, including' a number of spectators, who occupied the stage and the dress circle. The decorations were very gay, ami included a number of National flags and emblems. The music was provided by Perotti's orchestra and left nothing to be desired, and the supper presided over by the ladies' committee was on the most liberal scale. Dancing began at about half-past eight and was kept up with vigour until an early hour this morning, everyone having most thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The funeral of the late Mr Charles Cambridge, of Camerons, took place yesterday morning. The body of deceased had been taken to the residence of Mr Wilson, and here a very large number of friends and relatives assembled to pay their last respects to one who was. deservedly popular with all. The first portion of the burial service was taken by the Rev. T. F. Taylor at the house, after which a procession was formed and the cortege proceeded to the Greymouth cemetery, where the last sad rites' of the Anglican Church were performed by the Rev. T. F. Taylor. Many handsome floral emblems were laid on the coffin as an evidence of the sympathy of friends and relatives. The widow 'imd children of deceased, his mother, brothers and relatives have the deepest sympathy of all in the neighbourhood in this, their sad hour of bereavement.
