THE WHANG ATE’S ACCIDENT. AUCKLAND, October 7. Particulars rf the Whangape accident received by the Atua from Fiji show that about 240 miles south of tire Group on Friday, September 25th, in fine weather, the steamer suddenly came to a standstill, with the engines racing. The engineers discovered the shaft was broken, and a sail was immediately set to a favourable breeze. The Whangape made slow progress to Kadavu, and covered 150 miles by Monday. Captain Crisp found he was getting near the reefs, and despatched a boat to Suva. Good progress was made, but the Atua appearing signals of distress were hoisted, and the boat and party were picked up and landed at Suva at 4 a.m. COLLISION AT WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, October 7.—The steamer Takapuna, when clearing the wharf to night, collided with the stern of the Ahtenic. The only visible damage was the breaking of the Athcnic’s stern light. The Takapuna proceeded on her voyage to Now Plymouth. THE PETONE IN TROUBLE. WELLINGTON, October 7. The Blackball Company’s steamer Petonc passed Farewell Spit at six o’clock to-night for Wellington under sail and slow steam, her cylinder top being damaged. A STORMY VOYAGE. WELLINGTON. October 7.—Th« Moolaki met rough weather on Tuesday while voyaging from Sydney to Wellington. A i heavy sea came on board and fell on some stcorago.-passengers, one of whom, W. G. Brown, “hooked to Lyttelton, was swept along the deck and squeezed partly through the railings. He was badly wounded in the forehead and suffered several bruises. A steward named Hnrrod was thrown along the deck and had one of his wrists broken, besides being bruised. He is confined to his bunk. About forty feet of the Moeraki’s railing was carried away.
