WELLINGTON, July 10.—The Wellington Diocesan Synod this evening resolved that this Synod is of the opinion that the elimination of private profit in the licensed sale of intoxicating liquors wi’l be of the greatest importance to the cause of temperance in the country. A CANDIDATE. NEW PLYMOUTH, July 10.—W. G. Malone, who contested the Taranaki byeelection as an Independent Liberal, announces his candidature in the Government interests at the general election, which is almost certain to bo a triangular contest. C. F. Bellringer, it is under stood, will be the selected Government candidate. THE SINGING EVANGELIST. WANGANUI, July 10—Mr J. Harry Stephens, the singing evangelist, who has been representing the Evangelisation Society of Australasia here, left for Patea to-day after a most successful ten nays’ mission in the Baptist Church, the various churches participating. ACCIDENT AT SYDENHAM. CHRISTCHURCH, July 10. Ernest Perry, of Sydenham, is claiming £3OO from Horsley and Co. on account of an injury alleged to have been sustained while employed at Farnley brickworks. Perry’s foot had been caught in the roller used' for crushing clay. Ills toes and por tion of the foot having to be amputated. A NEW INDUSTRY. CHRISTCHURCH, July 10.—It is understood that Messrs Whyhrow and Co, a well-known Victorian boot manufacturing firm, have purchased a large area of land at the southern end of the city and purpose erecting thereon an extensive boot factory, it is stated that the firm will bring its own operatives over from Australia. THE STANDARD OIL COMPANY. CHRISTCHURCH, July 10—The Standard Oil Company’s business in New Zealand is to he transferred from the Colonial Oil Company to another company, which will form part of the Standard Oil organisation system. Previously the business was transacted by this local independent agency, acting as distributors; but now the company will have its own branches in each centre. The supply of oil, etc., will not be affected, and the prices will be as heretofore regulated according to instructions -.from headquarters. THE DECEASED STAPLES. DUNEDIN, July 10.—Staples, who committed suicide, rose shortly before 8, telling his wife ho meant to get a razor so:-, proceeded to the bathroom, where ho put an end to himself. He was the wicket keeper in the Carisbrook “B” team and a well-known sport. The deceased was aged 30 and had been married ten months. It is feared that financial troubles affected his mind. KEEPING LIQUOR FOR SALE. ASHBURTON, July 10.—James Nealon was fined £3O for keeping liquor for sale in a no license district. THE ASHBURTON WEATHER. ASHBURTON, July 10.—The weather during the past week has been similar to that in other parts of the province. From the first of the month till this morning 6.8 inches of rain have fallen.
