LITHGOW IRONWORKS CLOSED
FIVE HUNDRED MEN IDLED. [PEE PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPYRIGHT... SYDNEY, July 9. The Lithgow ironworks closed down to-night throwing five hundred men out of work.
Later. The closing of the lithgow ironworks was the out come of a ballot of the employees largely deciding against the, proposed reduction in wages. The closing will seriously affect the town of Lithgow.
The non-passing of the Iron Bonus Bill (New South" Wales) placed the Lithgow Ironworks in a critical position. The firm first asked the employees to accept a, reduction in wages ranging from 5 to 12|- per cent, till the bill is reintroduced in September, but the men refused to accept the reduction. The proprietors then modified their proposals and suggested that the amount deducted from wages should be held by the firm till September, when, if the Bonus Bill passed, the money would be refunded. If the Bill should not be passed, the firm would then retain the money and again confer with the men on the question of wages. The men have refused to accept this proposal, and the works will now be closed until September next.
