TELEGRAMS.

[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] A STARTLING INCIDENT. WOODVILLE, This Day.—A large boulder rolled down the hill between two large tunnels in the gorge, and struck an engine with sufficient force as to be felt throughout the train. Two cocks' of the steam chest were broken, but no other damage was done, STICKING UP CASES. NELSON, July 9.—Considerable uneasiness has been occasioned recently by several alleged sticking up cases reported from the outlaying parts of the city. Yesterday a very sensational story was related to the police by a man who said he had. been held up in Vanguard street late on the evening evening by three men who relieved him of a, small sum of money. As lie was going away he said they commenced tiring upon him with a revolver, whereupon lie drew a revolver ho was carrying himself, but which for sonic reason he had not used when attacked and returned the lire. As ho retreated to a neighboring house the shooting greatly alarmed the residents in the vicinity. After investigation tho police doubt the man's story and consider that the holding up was an hallucination, and that all the shooting was done by himself. Other cases which bear the stamp of genuineness, have been reported. However in one instance a. man having been badly knocked about on Britannia Heights the number of police on night duty has been augumented, and the more remote parts of the city are being pa trolled. CHILI) SUFFOCATED. CHRISTCHUItCH, July 9.—A oneyear old child was found dead in bed in a house at Heathcote this morning presumably suffocated. A Coroner's inquest will be held to-morrow morning. REPAIRING TELEGRAPHS. CHRISTCHURCH, July 9.—Two more of the direct northern telegraph wires were connected up to-day, and tho remaining two will be joined up to-morrow. The three direct wires and the one via Greymouth and Blenheim will be sufficient to deal with normal volume of work.
