PROSPECTING GRANTS. After wo went to press yesterday, jri regard to the grants made in aid' of Socting, the Chairman expressed his iction with the liberality shown by the Government it* the way of assisting prospecting parties, and moved that the Government,ho thanked for the assistance given, ' ; : ■ -.v--'- '- Cr. Marshall had great pleasure in supporting the motion, and considered’ that the receipt of the letters forwarding sub- - sidics in aid of prospecting be acknowledged. and the Minister be thanked for not only assisting parlies, but private individuals, in their prospecting operations. The resolution was carried. Tho Council adjourned till 3 p.m. for tho Hospital and Charitable Aid Board meeting. The Council resumed at 3.30 p.m. Inward correspondence continued— CORRESPONDENCE. From tho District Railway Engineer, complaining that tho water tables on tho road between No Town and Ngahcro required clearing out; surface water damages the railway formation. Referred lo the Engineer for report. Requesting that schedules be filled in, showing balance of grants duo 011 3lst March. Request granted. From the Department of Roads, stating they consider the Engineer’s estimate of £l3O for repairs to culverts excessive. Tho work should bo done for £lO. Received, and further explanation to bo given. From the Minister of Railways, stating that the necessary permission to construct the road from Kokiri to Moana, will bo granted, provided the Council erect a . fence lo separate the road line from the railway, and to submit a plan to the Minister for Railways for consideration. Received, and conditions agreed to bo complied with. I From' the Commissioner of frown Lands (Hokitika), ro payment of royalties on timber and llax, as reported elsewhere. A long discussion ensued 011 the reading of (his communication, and it was id Innately resolved that the Commissioner bo asked to furnish a detailed statement, showing each timber and liaxmill, tho output and royalties received. From J. Perry, occupier of ferrv hut on the Blackball road, appealing lo tlic Council not to turn him out because the hut had been sold. Received, rad no action taken.

From the Secretary of (he Grey Harbor Board, regarding a convenience at Cobilen.

The letter was received, and as the mat ter had been attended to, no further action was deemed necessary. From the Brunner Prospecting Association, asking for the usual assistance in prosecuting the work. The application was granted under the usual conditions.

From John Doolan, Totara Flat, asking to be allowed to open a road along (lie Grev River to CTaigieburu.

Referred, on flic motion of the Chairman, to the Engineer for report. From tlie Secretary to the Exhibition Committee, in regard to grants. The Clerk explained that the matter bad already been attended to, and the grants paid. From M. Meara, complaining that he had been twice charged for rates, and asking for a refund of £1 11s 2d. The Clerk explained that a mistake had been made, and it was resolved that the amount be refunded. A circular letter was received from the Vincent Comity Coimei), asking lliel'onn-c-il's co-operation in urging upon the Government the necessity for inducting lignite for royalty the same as flax and limber. etc.

After some discussion it was resolved to accede to the request. From A. G. Gunn, Cobden, requesting the Council to repair Fox Street leading past his residence, which could be done with a few loads of gravel. On the motion of Cr. Ryall, the request was granted. From W. Carniini, Secretary to the Exhibition Committee, Ahanra, asking for a grant of £lO to enable the Committee (0 forward an exhibit. Cm. Marshall and Hargreaves strongly supported the application, but as the Council bad already made a grant for exhibition purposes, no action was taken. From Thomas Lees, .Moonlight, asidng for an extension of one months lime for the completion of his contract for the formation of the Moonlight track. Resolved on the motion of the Chairman, that consideration ho deferred until after the contract is completed.

From the Town Clerk, Groyinonth. for warding ropy of resolution of the Council, that the County Council lie asked lo erect a lam]) in the centre of Cobden bridge at a cost, of about £4. the Borough Council to provide the pas free. An application from T. O'Doonnell to have a hole in Robinson street, Cobden, tilled in, was. on the motion of Cr Ryall, acceded to, (lie Engineer to attend to the matter.

The Secretary to the Paclolns Dredging Company wrote, asking that the t’oumil allow it to make a deviation in the road owing fo dredge workings. The Engineer wrote, slating there would he no objection, hut the work would have to he done entirely at the Company's expense. it was resolved cm the motion of Ur Larkin, that the reijnesl he granted, ami that the work he carried out to the satis faction of In* County Engineer. This concluded the ordinary business of the Council, and at 4.30 the Council adjourned till 7 p.m. to deal with finance. On resuming, ENGINEER’S REPORT. The Engineer reported that to fill in a hole in Bright street, Cohden, would co-t £10: that, with regard to .1. Duolau’s tip plication for a road giving access to his land, there existed a road through Mr Moore’s section, and that he- should be asked to erect swing gates; in the event of Mr Moore declining io do so, the road to he* opened. It was agreed to do I lie repairs at Cob den and to ask Mr Moore* to erect swing gales. Mr Higgins further re-ported : (1) Mrs Johnstone’s application to have feme between I loch fort's and Bradley’s at Kaiala removed.■■-The load leads from the Kaiata Native Reserve, where it joins a cross road from the Main Grey Valley Road. Mrs John tom- v.a . jn lifted in asking to have the fences removed. (2) Uddstrom s sawmill tramway at Ngahere.—After setting out the conditions under which the construction of the tramway across the road had been grant ed. the Engineer stated that trucks loaded with logs had broken away on the incline several times —sometimes they were do railed, hut on mansions they had mine down tin* incline and crossed the road at terrific sliced; fortunately the road was clear of traffic on such occasions. A very serious accident might occur if precautions were not taken. He had written to the proprietors revoking permission to cross the road unless points were put in and a signalman on the road: also point ing out the possibility that they might he called upon to carry the tramway over the road on an over-bridge. He had received no reply to that letter. Cr Larkin said it was impossible for traffic coming from Nelson Greek to see the trucks coming, and they came with such force that they were very dangerous. He would he the last to impose harsh conditions on a company employing so many, hut they must consider the safety of those using the road. He moved that the terms of the Engineer’s letter to the Company he endorsed, and it he left to the Engineer to see that his requirements wore carried out and the safety of the public assured.

Cr. Hargreaves seconded, and was a I opinion that nothing could obviate (In danger to persons on the road except the carrying out of the Engineer’s recommendations. The Engineer asked if the overhead bridge should he insisted on. Cr. Larkin said he did not think it would work. In reply to the Engineer, he staled that he had passed the place yesterday, and no set of points had been put in. The motion was agreed to.

Regarding Mrs Johnston’s application, it was decided that the persons who fenced off the road ho asked to erect swing gates; failing which, the road to bo opened. To the Engineer with power to act was referred the question of the proper lighting of the railway crossing at Cohden bridge. TENDERS. It was decided to extend the time for receiving tenders for Harris road (section 1,2 and 3) till Tuesday next, the plans and specifications having been delayed in transit to Mr. Corbett, Teremakan Settlement. The Chairman and Engineer were empowered to open and deal with the tenders.
