KUMARA BOROUGH COUNCIL
[OUtt OWN COUEESPONPENT.] The interim meeting of the above was held on Thursday. Present—Cros. Rouse, chair, McGlone, Campbell, Eggleton, Evenden, Jones and Jorgensen. From C. C. Evenden, applying for 200 foot of additional hose. Cr Eggleton proposed, and Cr Campbell seconded, that the request he held over until the report of the sub-committee appointed to enquire into the finances is received. Cr Jorgensen moved an amendment, that the request be granted, and that the hose be procured. He said it was very necessary that the hose be procured us soon as possible. The Council had spent money on less worthy objects, and it was a long time since they had procured anything for the Fire Brigade. Some of the present hose was unreliable. Seconded by Cr Evenden. The amendment was carried. The Fire Brigade also asked that steps he taken to prevent the storage of dynamite and other explosives in houses within the borough, where the brigade would he called on to act in case of fire. After discussion, the Chairman said there was no by-law hearing on the subject.
Cr Evendcn then gave notice of motion for next mooting that a by-law be framed to prohibit the storage of explosives within the town.
Proposed by Cr. Rouse, seconded by Cr Jones, that half th cost of recent repairs to the boundary road be charged to the- Westland County Council. Carried.
The Chairman reported on behalf of the Public Works Committee as follows: — Repairs to boundary road had been completed, and the drain in Main Street is now being constructed. The time for presenting the. report of the special committee on fianace was extended till next meeting. The Chairman reported that .Mr Stanton had complained of blackberries in an adjoining section. It was decided to take no action as the Borough is not a district under the Noxious Weeds Act. Cr Campbell brought up the subject of an extra lamp at the head of Seddon Street. He stated that since the burning of the Criterion Hotel the road was very dark. After leave to nibve having been refused, Cr Campbell gave notice of motion that a lamp be erected for next meetTiio following applications were received for Town Clerk Messrs J. S. Benyon, R. C. Bull, F. Thorn, and W. B. Gilbert. Cr. Egglefon moved, and Cr Jorconsen seconded, that the names be reduced one at a time by ballot. The first ballot left Thorn and Gilbert in and Benyon and Bell a tie. The latter two were placed in the hat, and Bell was successful. The second ballot left Bell and Gilbert in with six votes each. The final resulted: Gilbert 5,801 12. The Chairman moved that Mr W. tii Gilbert receive the appointment.
