A humbio resident of Paris was fined for stealing cabbages. The authorities went to collect the fine, and found the house prepared fjr a siege. They invited him to surrender. He replied with a salute of bullets. Troops were brought to tho scene, and after four days' excitement it was found that tho man had hanged himself. An American millionaire, Mr Clay Pierce, refused to pay for a portrait of his wife. Ho declared she laoked more dis tinguished ; the artist said he flattered the lady.
