GOOD ATHLETICS

TOURLNG AUSTRALIANS HAMPSON’S FAST 220 (Pei Prass Association). Invercargill, February 28 About 1200 people assembled at Rugby Park this evening to see tbe Australian athletes perform, and came away thoroughly satisfied with the brilliant running of Hampson, and the prowess of Metcalfe as a jumper, while E. Berwick, though beaten by J. J. Morrisfi the promising Dunedin runner, in a fast mile, showed that lie is returning to the form which won him sueli a high place in distance running in Australia. Hampson maintained bis unbeaten record in New Zealand by winning with comparative ease the ICO yards and 220 yards"handicaps, the former ill tile very fine time of 10 1-5, and the hitter in the even better time of 22. His time for the furlong is the fastest he has recorded oil the present tour, and is only two-fiftlis of a second outside his best. Metcalfe delighted the crowd w ith a magnificent jump of 6ft. 3in., and by clearing 47ft. 4in. in the bop, step, and jump, and 22ft 3in. in tliu broad jump, and putting the shot 36ft. 10in., he showed what a splendid all-round performer lie is. J. J. Morris, of the Caversham club, ran the fastest mile of his career, and, so far as can be learned, established record figures for Rugby Park. Morris and Barwick had met on two occasions previously, the first time being in the Australian championships in 1927, and the second time in Dunedin last Saturday. Not only had honours rested with the Tasmanian, lint liis Australian record of 4.17 made him a strong favourite for this evening’s event. It was a most spectacular mile, with Barwick .Morris, and Johnston, the three scratch men, never far apart, and having the last lap to themselves. Two hundred yards from home Morris took the lead and withstood Barwick’s challenge to win in 4.25 1-5.
