HEROISM RECALLED
SINKING OF THE WIMMEIIA DEATH OF MRS. E. GOULD. The death which has occurred at Taihoa. at Ihe age of SO years, recalls the sinking of the Wimmora, which struck r. mine off the north coast of New Zealand on the morning of June 25, .1918, when en route from Auckland to Sydney. 20 lives being lost. Mrs. Gould left the ship in the last hoat, having insisted that the younger passengers should he given the first chance. There were several instances of individual heroism on the part of the women passengers among them being Mrs. Gould’s conduct, it was stated after the wreck that Mrs. Gould’os heroism served as an inspiration to others. When the boats were being launched Mrs. Gould cried out: “Let the young people go. I have had my life. I will go down with the shij>.” Willing arms, however, carried her into the boat, and she and another lady subsequently did much to cheer and hearten other members of the party. Upon her return to Matamata Mrs. Gould was presented with an illuminated address liy the residents in appreciation of her heroism. Mrs. Gould was horn at Waterbeach. Cambridgeshire and came to New Zealand in the Sailing ship Hawser almost 50 years ago. She was -married at Timaru in 1885 to the late Mr. B. Gould.
