ON TRIAL FOR MURDER THE HEARING OPENS I LENGTHY REVIEW BY CROWN j LETTER, TO GIRT, IN THE CASE (Per Pi of*. Association). Palmertcm, North, Feb. 8. The hearing lias commenced in the Sui’vine Court before Mr Justice ’ Ostler in which Norman I>ooke, 19, a faj-mtand, of Fitzherhert is charged with the murder at Kareve on or about August 23 of Edwin JJakeway, cyclist who was found dead by the roadside, the result- of bullet wounds. Fifteen jurors were erdet ed to stand aside by the Crowd ftolLitor a t) lice by counsel for the accused. The Crown Solicitor spent a < onsidcrabio time addressing the -coart on tlie cage for the Crown and teviewing the evidence to bo brought. Amongst the letters read was the following from Hooke to- Miss Meihan in June: “Tills i s probably the last letter T will ever write you, not because T want it to be but because I cannot do Anything else under the circumstances.” He added that Deok 0 in July purchased a rifle. JURY TO INSPECT The Court adjourned rill 3 o'clock to enable the jury to inspect all the localities concerned in the case.
