GETTING DESPERATE

NEED FOR ROOMS AT THE HIGH SCHOOL APPEAL TO MINISTER HA’ TOE BOARD Conditions at the High ScJinqJ. w'icß’ the lack of .accommodation ler pupils has lw'?n apparent for some time, were made worse thrmigli the evacuation of the Technical Schorl building in Fepgusson street following the earthquake. Prior to a u scare following the Hawke’s Bay disaster the Department lmd agreed to the erection of two additional class rooms at the High School, and a tender had act ually been accepted; lint the work was stopped owing to the Department having leitermined not to build in hriclc. Since the Fergnss' n street building was evacuated the school has been using two tents as class rooms, and now w ith the wet went!lor having set in. this temporary accommodation has become mrtst unsatisfactory. A DTSOrSSTOX Last night -the Board of Managers of the School discussed the subject very seriously, and decided to invite the Hon. J. Ci. Cubbe to visit the school at the week-end and meet the members there. AIR WILD’S STATEMENT Mr L. J. Wild said the Department had no reply to the pressing requests for the rooms required. At the jugs victis meeting of the Board it was reported (that the Minister had agreed to the. eree-tion of a block of rooms in wood, these_ rooms being all the more necessary by the evacuation of lho Technical School building.in Fcrjifusson street. The Department hau since heore pressed for a start to be made with the erectiost of t-ho rooms, and the Hon. .1. G. Cobhel had born asked to assist the Board in making the request an urgent one. rSFD EVERT MEANS In his monthly report to the Beard the Headmaster said: — There is still no information at all in regard to additional accommodation. We have turned out the cloakrooms to make class rooms', and the corridor.-, in weather stub as that exp: rienred to-day, are full of steaming coats; so that the atmosphere it the. class rooms, wliicth are cross-ven-tilated to the ouri idols, is most offensive. Conditions in the two louts that are in. use are beyond description. Classes in ro'okory. lor our own school ns well as lor primary schools, have been- indefinitely suspended. THE DECISION Mr Atkinson, spoke with some emphasis on the need tor getting- the rooms and hoped every effort, woyld ’lie. made to induce the Minister to authorise the work. Mr Buist said to house the children in tents was scandalous in this wea thor. It was decided to ask tfie Hon. J. G. ('oldie, to meet the Board on Saturday afternoon, or evening, OFFER OF ROOM Last month the HeadmntsW reported he had received a very generous offer from the Presbyterian, Church authorities for the use of St. Paul’s Hall for classes. Though the off*-, was a really helpful one, he thought iV hardly suitabe to distribute tho classes and had not accepted it. (Last month this offer was inadvertently credited to .the Anglican Church in our report.)
