SETTLERS BEARING BURDEN

NO RATES PAID BY FOREST SERVICE The State Forest Service pays no •rates 'in respect of the lands it occupies. The settlers of Puriri, at a meeting asked Mr A. M. Samuel, M.P., to endeavour to have tlie law altered. It was stated that of 2<>3,(J00 acres in the Thames County, 90,000 were locked up in State forests or Crown lands, while 140,000 acres were unoccupied. Nevertheless, the County Council had to maintain 70 miles of roads. The ratepayers on the flat area, occupying some 10,000 acres, wore heavily rated to keep these roads in repair.

Mr Samuel said that Puriri war, not the only district that had t<> face these ijrobleiiis. He was of the opininion that the Forest Service Department should contribute in rates to relieve the settlers. He promised to bring the* matter before Parliament.
