COMING OF AGE
MR W. REID’S GRANDSON
In honour of the coming of age of their son, William, Mr and Mrs W. E. Baker, Makino road, entertained a very large number of relatives and friends at a dance in the Parish Hall. Transformed into a drawingroom, the stage provided every 7 comfort for those sitting out. Packer’s full orchestra rendered excellent music, extras were contributed by Mrs Percy Simpson. Messrs Percy Simpson and Nofel Bramwell carried out the duties of M‘s.C. Miss Ethel Younger and Air Alf. Humphreys were the winners of the lucky hats, Miss Anneslev, of Levin, and Mr H. Hooper, winners of the Spot waltz, and Miss Joyce Neil and Mr M. Cummings winners of the Monte Carlo waltz. Amongst the numerous gifts received was a miniature greenstone mere set in gold, a gift from Air William Reid, who, upon handing the token to his grandson, said that it was a custom among old-time Maoris for a mere to be handed down from father to son, the tradition being that all the qualities that go to make a brave warrior were by means of the mere conferred upon the recipient. Mr Reid remarked that he hoped this particular mere would be handed on to the next generation.
