WOMEN OF THE ORIENT
W.E.A.’s NEXT SUBJECT
The status of women will be the interesting topic of the W.E.A. lecture and discussion in the “East and West” course at the Oddfellows’ Hall next Friday evening. The lecturer, Mr J. A. Brailsford, 8.A., will show that, in the eyes of the Eastern people the position of women is not one of subjection, but of honourable protection ; just as in our own period of chaperonage. The claim system of the East demands that both men and women shall subordinate their own interests to those of the familv. The lecturer will discuss the position of women in India, China and Japan, and will make special reference to Katherine Mayo’s" attack on “Mother India.” The audience will be invited to discuss the question whether our women and girls are truly emancipated.
